Robert Barclay Fetter was born in Berwyn, Illinois, on May 6, 1924. In 1947, he was awarded a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He received an M.B.A. and a D.B.A. from Indiana University, in 1949 and 1952, respectively. From 1953 to 1958, Fetter worked as an assistant professor of industrial management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
